Trip Advisor, Traveler’s Choice 2021
The Serengeti National park has been home to the Lemala Nanyukie luxury tented lodge since 2018. This area of the Serengeti is the site of the annual wildebeest migration, and host to a high density game viewing experience year-round. The brief for Lemala Nanyukie required a lodge that would complement this rich migratory pageant, specifying purpose-built accommodations that could offer guests a truly immersive wildlife experience from the proximity and safety of a tented camp.
TENSILE ARCHITECTURE, THE PINNACLE OF GUEST EXPERIENCE DESIGN
The site at Ngare Nanyukie offers a convenient, natural amphitheater for game viewing. The challenge thrown down by this majestic setting is how best to create a luxury tensile tented camp that remains inconspicuously nestled between the ageless granite boulders and acacia trees. From a distance the camp melts into the surrounding bush yet, from within the seclusion of its tented walls, Lemala Nanyukie succeeds in presenting an unparalleled view of this majestic, untouched wilderness. The crowning achievement of Nanyukie is obvious in the respectful and aesthetically congruent presentation of an ultra-luxury tented camp, built around high-performance tensile engineering that all but disappears from view, to give center-stage to the migratory herds of the spectacular Serengeti.
MAIN TENTED PRECINCTS
Guests at Lemala Nanyukie are welcomed into a light, modern-safari palette of soft whites and neutral tones to canvas walls and cathedral-like tented ceilings. The double-volume of the main precinct features a well-appointed, luxurious lounge and bar, along with an outdoor viewing deck that leads to a swimming pool and adjacent open and covered dining areas. A central feature of the main precinct is the campfire area, providing a magnetic, central node for guests to congregate for a post-dinner drink and story swapping session after a full day on safari. A secluded spa precinct adds to the elegant tensile design of this luxurious camp, offering sweeping views across these broad Tanzanian plains.
TENSILE LUXURY CAMP ACCOMODATIONS
The 15 guest accommodations include 13 standard camp suites and one additional family suite. Carefully spaced across the natural amphitheater, they have been carefully placed for maximum privacy. Each tented suite suite is orientated around the two small hills which punctuate the wide plain, to maximize the guest viewing experience. The guest accommodations afford guests a sublime visual flow from the lounge area through to the bed-, and even bathrooms. Living spaces can be fragmented through moveable lightweight partitions to create a customizable and more intimate experiences. Covered, all-weather sunken hardwood decks provide an extension to the private living quarters and a continuation of the fully immersive wilderness experience can be found in the outdoor showers and plunge pools, allowing guests the opportunity to cool off without losing sight of the migratory spectacle unfolding below.
TENTHOUSE STRUCTURES’ ICONIC CURVED TENSILE ENGINEERED ROOFS
The textile technologies employed in the tensile roofing solutions rely on high-performance, lightweight tensile fabrics to provide an state-of-the-art thin-envelope barrier to keep the African sun at bay. Drawing design inspiration from the surrounding acacia trees and dominant granite boulders of this migratory plain, the tensile roofing draws its strength from a simple principle of tarso physics: The more curvature, the more efficient the structure becomes. This iconic Lemala Nanyukie aesthetic is carried through to the structure of the main precincts with steel column detailing that mirrors the splay of the delicate branches of the majestic acacia trees.
