THE MOMBO AND LITTLE MOMBO TEXTILE ARCHITECTURE SOLUTION

TEXTILE ARCHITECTURE TO FRAME THE OKAVANGO EXPERIENCE

Wilderness Safari’s flagship camps Mombo, and Little Mombo are tucked into the belly of Africa’s majestic Okavango Delta. Their successful rebuild is the culmination of a year of intensive planning, and technical engineering, followed by another of complex construction and intensive project management. The state of the art textile architecture roofing solution on these two camps champions the aesthetic vision of the client and meets the technical high-performance architectural challenges of construction on the Okavango Delta.

Multi-level, high-performance textile architecture

Over the course of the two-year project, the Tenthouse Structures team delivered 48 independent tensile roof structures covering three main precincts, twelve accommodation units, and one family villa. Each textile architecture structure–engineered from multiple elliptical ring beams, and box-reinforced plasma cut plates–had to be integrated into a dynamic system of multi-leveled walls, pergolas, and screens. Half of the challenge lay in creating demonstration units to ensure the accurate positioning and seamless installation of all the site elements.

An elevated guest experience

Specialized, non-symmetrical layouts were developed for each of the living areas in order to maximize the majestic views commanded by the location of each unit. Accommodation units included specialized structural and safety requirements such as weather and animal barriers that also required an aesthetic appointment of their own to allow them to blend, harmoniously with the surrounding environment.

Tensile roof accommodation units

Project management comes hand in hand with any major project such as this rebuild of the Mombo camps. The Tenthouse team kept a tight rein on costs, managing the budget for each and every customized element developed for this project. This included the procurement and of all the structural components–shipped under tight international regulations–across the Botswanan border. These specialized elements were deployed to smaller vehicles and boats on the delta channels, in order to safely transport them to the Mombo sites. Coupled with an efficient construction-management process, an awareness of the sensitive ecosystem was maintained throughout the project by the Tenthouse Structures team.
